Hello to everyone that is reading this!

This blog will be used to show the transition from my final year of study at the University of Cumbria into working life. It will also discuss ideas around my Professional Development, the end of year Degree Show and just following me on my journey for this final portion.

It will also be a place to share people, places, thoughts and ideas I have had over the course of the time I have been here. I would also like to try and keep this active after my time at University.

The posts will be arranged in date order, with an 'Archive' section to find older blog posts should you miss one. I will also be adding 'Keywords' to the posts to help keep everything neat and ordered. If you do have any  questions, or would like to know any more about anything talked about in these posts, feel free to send me a message on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thevisualsofjoe/ or just send an email to [email protected]

Enjoy learning and reading about my ideas!

What has been my role in the Degree Show

May 02, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
I have been a part of both the Design and Organisation Team for the degree show, as I felt that I would want to have a say in the designs put forward by other students and also maybe offer my own. I feel organisation is a strength I do have and I have not only shown this through the work that has come out this semester, but in previous years too. I...

Potential Life as a Sole Trader

May 01, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
This is something else which has come across in my decisions about what to do after University is potentially looking to set up my own business and run as a sole trader. There are a few things that I need to remember if I decide to go down this route: - I am responsible for any losses the business makes - I am responsible for any of my business'...

Looking to the Future

April 30, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
Life after University will certainly be something of an uncertainty for me. Having such a sense of normality and a routine and to see that change will be different to me. It obviously means that it will open new doors and possibilities, but I would want to look into the Real Estate market and look for potential jobs, maybe starting off with an assi...

Book Research

April 26, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
To accompany my print for the Degree Show, I wanted a book to help showcase the other buildings as part of this project. This has not been an easy task for me, as it has been a difficult process and at times challenging in order to ensure I achieved the correct look (orientation) and how the images will be laid out within the book, the use of text,...

Job Research: Property Photographer

April 09, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
In a more general look into the role of a Real Estate Photographer, there are a few skills that one is either expected to possess from past experience or is willing to learn in this new role. The main one is the ability to create accurate floorplans, which as I say is something you can either come with or wanting to learn. Apart from that, having a...

Job Searching

April 05, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
As part of our course, we have to delve into the real world and go job hunting. We would, in essence, have to find a job application, whether it is live or not and essentially look like we would be applying for that job. This is definitely of huge benefit as it helps us in the real world when we want to go and apply for places. Some people chose jo...

Review: The Photography Show 2019

March 25, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
As well as Format Festival, I attended the Photography Show held at the NEC. It was a fantastic event, focusing on the technical side and equipment. A huge selection of stands were there selling their latest gadgets, books, cameras, inventions and much more. The dominant focus of the Photography Show normally switches year to year, with last year s...

Review: Format Festival

March 23, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
Format Festival for me was a fantastic opportunity for me to see what I am going up against essentially as it is a graduate based show. The works on show were such a variety. One that definitely stuck with me was Craig Easton's Sixteen project, documenting the crucial age of sixteen for so many of us. The age of sixteen is a time not only when we a...

Updating Layout

March 20, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
Following careful consideration and feedback, I have decided to update my layout and composition for my project. It was originally going to be in the shape of a cross to represent the fact I was taking images of religious buildings, however since that isn't the main focus of the body of work, I had to change the idea up a bit. So, after having an i...

Fundraising: Cake Sales

March 19, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
We are in full swing with the process of fundraising for our Degree Show. So far, the Kickstarter alone has raised £361! which is fantastic considering we set ourselves a £500 goal. The Kickstarter was a way to inject early money into the Degree Show, and as part of the fundraising, we have also done other events such as cake sales and quiz nights...

Format Festival: Derby

March 18, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
I headed down to Format Festival in Derby with a sense of excitement about seeing what everyone else was doing in the world of the arts and specifically photography. There were a huge amount of exhibitions to go and see with such a variety of projects ranging from hundreds of polaroid shots of skies to finding images around a marketplace to a proje...

Update: Installing the work and composition

March 02, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
Over the past few weeks, I have had a few different ideas about how my work should be presented at the Degree Show. As you know, my first idea was to stick the images onto 'Dibond' and then attach these to a wooden cross, because of the significant religious symbolisation. But, because my project is moving away from the religious element and more f...

We have a Logo!

March 01, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
We have come up with a logo for our Degree show! It took a little while for us in the Design Team to bounce ideas between each other and come up with a design we liked and then this logo would go to the whole class to get their approval too, and luckily for us, they agreed! And so below you can see our logo design for the Open Format Degree Show....

Who has inspired me?

February 13, 2019  •  Leave a Comment
A lot of my inspiration for this project has come down to the fantastic work of late Magnum photographer Peter Marlow. Marlow's series The English Cathedral is of huge inspiration because in the body of work Marlow depicts these buildings as magnificent and powerhouses. Not just the meaning behind the images, but the rigour and methodology is not o...
